COMPLETE SUMMARY IN ENGLISH

In this poem, the poet expresses a sense of pain over modern man’s indifference to the beauties of nature. Man remains so engrossed in his material pursuits that he has no time for leisure. The poet feels that such a life is useless. A life of worry and hurry can’t give us any joy.

The poet sees that the modern man remains too much occupied with his material pursuits. He runs all the time after money and other material things. He has no leisure. He has no time to look at the beauties of nature. The poet calls such a life a poor life. With a sense of deep pain he asks :

What is this life, if full of care, 

We have no time to stand and stare?

We have no time to stand under a shady tree and watch the grazing cows and sheep. We have no time to watch the beauty of a forest as we are passing by it. We have no time to watch the activities of little birds and animals. We have no time to watch the beauty of clear streams. And we have no time to turn and look at the beautiful face of a girl who has passed by us on her dancing feet. We have no time to watch how the smile, that began in her eyes, spreads to her lips and makes them even more beautiful. Thus, the poet himself answers the question he has raised in the first two lines of the poem.He says :

A poor life this, if full of care 

We have no time to stand and stare.

इस कविता में कवि प्रकृति की सुन्दरताओं के प्रति आथ निक व्यक्ति की विमुखता पर पीड़ा की भावना व्यक्त करता है। मनुष्य अपनी भौतिक भाग-दौड़ में इतना व्यस्त रहता है कि उसके पास फुरसत का कोई समय नहीं है। कवि महसूस करता

है कि इस तरह का जीवन बेकार ही है। चिन्ता और भाग-दौड़ का जीवन हमें कोई खुशी प्रदान नहीं कर सकता। 

कवि देखता है कि आधुनिक व्यक्ति अपनी भाग-दौड़ में बहुत ज्यादा व्यस्त रहता है। वह हर समय पैसे तथा दूसरी . भौतिक चीजों के पीछे भागता रहता है। उसके पास कोई फुरसत ही नहीं है। उसके पास प्रकृति के सौन्दर्य को देखने का समय नहीं होता है। कवि इस तरह के जीवन को घटिया जीवन कहता है। गहरी पीड़ा की भावना से वह पूछता है-

यह जीवन भी क्या है अगर चिन्ता से भरे हों हम, और समय ही न हो, फुरसत में यूं ही खड़ा होने का। हमारे पास कोई समय नहीं है कि किसी छायादार पेड़ के नीचे खड़े होकर चरती हुई गायों और भेड़ों को देखें। हमारे पास कोई समय नहीं है कि किसी जंगल की सुन्दरता को देखें, जब हम इसके पास से गुजर रहे हों। हमारे पास निर्मल जलधाराओं वाली नदियों को भी देखने का समय नहीं है। हमारे पास इतना समय भी नहीं कि हम घूमकर किसी सुन्दर लड़की के चेहरे को देखें जो अपने नाचते हुए कदमों से हमारे करीव से गुजर कर गई हो। हमारे पास इतना समय नहीं कि हम देखें कि . उसकी आँखों से शुरू हुई मुस्कान किस तरह फैलकर उसके ‘होठों तक पहुँच जाती है और उन्हें और भी सुन्दर बना देती है। इस प्रकार कवि उस प्रश्न का उत्तर स्वयं ही दे देता है जो उसने कविता की पहली दो पंक्तियों में उठाया है। वह कहता है-

निम्न जीवन है यह. अगर चिन्ता से भरे हों हम, 

और समय ही न हो यूं फुरसत में खड़ा होने का।
