The author begins by narrating a very significant event of his life that happened at the time of his birth. He was bom on July 10, 1949 in a hospital with a hole near the top of his left ear lobe. This mark was noticed by his uncle Mr. Narayan Masurekar. He found it missing from the child’s ear on his next visit to hospital. Clearly, the child had been exchanged. A frantic search revealed a baby sleeping blissfully beside a fisherwoman in the hospital, who had also given birth to a baby. The babies got changed while giving them a bath.
The author feels that providence had helped him to retain his identity. Had it not been so, he would have been leading life of an obscure fisherman. He also wonders if that boy would ever be interested if that boy would ever be interested in cricket and read his book.
The author tells about the influences that helped him groom as a cricketer. He almost broke his mother’s nose with a nasty hit off a tennis ball that his mother lobbed at him. Her nose was bleeding profusely. The author was frightened. But the mother washed her face and continued the game. Thereafter, he did not hit the ball hard and played only forward defence.
The author’s father was a keen student of the game and a good club cricketer. So he feels that cricket was ‘in his blood’. His mother helped him learn the first cricketing lessons at home. His uncle, Madhav Mantri álso shaped his career as a cricketer. The author used to visit his house. He had played in four test matches for India. He had the pullovers of India-colour at his house. The author used to touch these with a sense of longing. Once he dared to ask him if he could have one for himself. His uncle told him that he had to sweat it out to eam it. The author learnt a lesson that there was no short cut to success. He was also attracted to many souvenirs and trophies earned by his uncle. He liked most a stump bearing the autographs of the 1952 India and England teams. He loved to linger over the autograph of every player.

लेखक के पिता क्रिकेट के खेल के एक जिज्ञासु विद्यार्थी थे और क्लब स्तर के एक अच्छे क्रिकेटर थे। अत: उसका मानना है कि क्रिकेट उसकी रगों में बहता था। उसकी माँ ने घर पर उसे क्रिकेट का पहला पाठ पढ़ाया। एक क्रिकेटर के रूप में उसके भविष्य को आकार देने में उसके मामा माधव मन्त्री का भी हाथ था। लेखक उसके घर पर जाया करता था। उन्होंने भारत की तरफ से चार टेस्ट मैच भी खेले थे। उसके . घर पर भारत के विशेष रंग वाली जर्सियाँ भी थीं। लेखक उनको बड़ी हसरत भरे भाव से छुआ करता था। एक बार उसने पूछने का साहस कर लिया कि क्या वह उनमें से एक ले सकता है। ‘उसके मामा ने उसे समझाया कि इसे पाने के लिए उसे परिश्रम करना होगा। लेखक ने यह सबक सीखा कि सफलता का कोई छोटा रास्ता नहीं है। उसके मामा द्वारा विजित और भी कई स्मारक चिन्ह और चल-विजयोपहार देख कर वह आकर्षित हो जाया करता था। वर्ष 1952 की भारत और इंग्लैण्ड की टीम के द्वारा हस्ताक्षर की गई एक स्टम्प उसे सबसे ज्यादा पसन्द थी। वह हर खिलाड़ी के हस्ताक्षर को देखता रह जाता था।
लेखक ने हमेशा ही एक बल्लेबाज बनना चाहा था। उसे अपनी विकेट खो देना (अर्थात् आउट हो जाना) बिल्कुल पसन्द नहीं था। खेल के प्रति उसकी भावना इतनी तीव्र थी कि वह आउट करार दिए जाने पर बल्ले और गेंद को लेकर चल देता था ! खेल फिर वहीं पर समाप्त हो जाया करता था। बाकी के लड़के उसे गालियाँ देते थे। किन्तु वे फिर से मित्र बन जाते और टीम बना लेते थे। आमरे बन्धु और मांडरेकर बन्धु उसके शुरुआत के क्रिकेट भित्रों में से एक थे। जब भी लेखक बल्लेबाजी करता, तो वे किसी विशेष गेंद पर एक साथ अपील करने लगते। अधिकांश लोगों के मत के चलते लेखक को आउट हो कर जाना पड़ता था. भले ही वह आउट था या नहीं। वे चल-विजयोपहार खरीदने के लिए पैसा इकट्ठा करते थे, जो कुछ और नहीं बल्कि सफेद धातु वाले कप हुआ करते थे। जो वे मात्र एक रुपया पचास पैसे में खरीद कर लाते थे।
